Historical Background

Before the formation of Rajasthan, many of the covenanting States like Jaipur, Jodhpur, Alwar, Udaipur etc. had separate Directorates of Industries. With the formation of Rajasthan the offices of Directorate of Industries of various States were integrated and an unified Directorate of Industries started functioning at Ajmeri Gate, Jaipur under Dr. N.N. Godbole, the first Director of Industries & Supplies of Rajasthan.

Thereafter, with the passage of time, lot of changes including administrative changes took place in the department. The Headquarters of Directorate of Industries shifted to Udyog Bhawan, Tilak Marg, Jaipur after staying for a while at Chomu House.

With a view to encouraging Small Scale Industries the Collectors and Superintendents of Industries & Commerce at districts and Divisional Headquarters respectively were empowered to sanction starting of small scale industries with a capital of not more than rupees one lac. Industrial Regional Committees were organized throughout Rajasthan for exploring the possibilities of setting up industries of various types in the State.

In the year 1978 there was a total change over in the administrative set up of the department with the District Industries Centre Scheme coming into force. In Rajasthan 9 DICs were started in the year 1978-79, 7 more in the year 1979-80 and finally in the year 1980-81 all remaining districts were also covered. In the decade of nineties, the post of Director of Industries was upgraded to Commissioner of Industries, the name of office changed to Office of Commissioner of Industries and the number of districts in the State also reached up to 32.

Office of Commissioner of Industries, Commerce & CSR functions as the nodal agency for industrial development in the State. For the SSI sector, it provides all services except financing. For the Large and Medium Scale Industries also it provides various industrial promotion services. The Office of Commissioner of Industries is also engaged in the task of coordinating between different agencies responsible for industrial development in the State. The office maintains exhaustive information base on the industrial scenario in the state and also conducts several types of surveys form time to time. It also helps industries in marketing their products by way of organizing fairs and exhibitions form time to time and by way of facilitating the units by participating in national level fairs and exhibitions.

There are 36 District Industries Centres functioning in the State and 8 District Industries Sub-Centres. These centres have been set up to cater to the needs of small scale industries of the area. The Industries Department is located at Udyog Bhawan, Tilak Marg, Jaipur.

The main function of the Department is to promote small scale industries and marketing of their products. The Department also promotes handicraft & handloom products, encourages production of salt and caters to the welfare of the artisans. The Department also registers those Small Scale Industries (SSI) units which are functioning under various schemes of the Government of India.
